The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an aviation icon, designed as the U.S. Navy's primary air superiority fighter and long-range interceptor. Its variable-geometry wings and powerful radar and missile system made it one of the most formidable aircraft of its era, a true symbol of Western air power during the Cold War.
Iran was the only export customer for the F-14, purchasing 79 units in 1976, during the Shah's rule. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, these aircraft, now without American support, became the first and most important line of defense for the new Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF). During the brutal Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), Iranian F-14s were used as ground-based interceptors and proved extremely lethal, with Iranian pilots claiming the downing of at least 160 Iraqi aircraft.
This exclusive artwork by Alexandre Guedes depicts the F-14A Tomcat, registration 3-6027, of the 82nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (82nd TFS), as it operated from Khatami Air Base in 1985, at the height of the Iran-Iraq War. This piece is a faithful record of one of the most lethal interceptors of the conflict, a testament to the remarkable skill of Iranian pilots and maintenance crews in maintaining and operating one of the world's most complex aircraft in complete isolation.
