The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a naval aviation legend, designed for the U.S. Navy as the primary air superiority fighter and fleet defense interceptor during the Cold War. Its ability to engage multiple targets at long ranges, combined with its variable-geometry wings, made it one of the most formidable and recognizable aircraft of its era, a true symbol of American naval air power.
With a history dating back to World War II, VF-74 "Be-Devilers" was a veteran squadron that, after 21 years flying the F-4 Phantom, transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in 1983. The squadron gained notoriety in 1985 when its F-14s, operating from the USS Saratoga, intercepted an Egyptian Boeing 737 carrying the terrorists responsible for the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. In 1988, VF-74 made history again by becoming the first squadron in the fleet to receive the F-14A+ (later redesignated F-14B), a significantly improved version of the Tomcat.
This exclusive artwork by Alexandre Guedes depicts the F-14A Tomcat, Bureau Number 160891, one of the aircraft that served with the VF-74 "Be-Devilers." This specific aircraft was tragically lost in a crash in the Mediterranean Sea on September 20, 1982, during operations from the USS Independence. This piece serves as a tribute to the aircraft and the crews who flew with the "Be-Devilers" during the Tomcat era.
