The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a naval aviation legend, designed for the U.S. Navy as the primary air superiority fighter and fleet defense interceptor during the Cold War. With a history dating back to World War II, VF-74 "Be-Devilers" was a veteran squadron that, after 21 years flying the F-4 Phantom, transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in 1983. The squadron gained notoriety in 1985 when its F-14s, operating from the USS Saratoga, intercepted an Egyptian Boeing 737 carrying the terrorists responsible for the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. In 1988, VF-74 made history again by becoming the first squadron in the fleet to receive the F-14A+ (later redesignated F-14B), a significantly improved version of the Tomcat.
