The Grumman S2F-1 Tracker was a revolutionary aircraft that changed anti-submarine warfare (ASW) at the height of the Cold War. It was the first aircraft specifically designed to combine the roles of "hunter" (detection) and "killer" (attack) in a single platform, a capability that previously required two aircraft flying in tandem. Nicknamed "Stoof" (a corruption of its S-Two-F designation), the Tracker was a rugged workhorse, capable of operating from aircraft carriers with its arsenal of sonobuoys, radar, a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD), and a cargo of torpedoes and depth charges.

After its heroic service in the Korean War, the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Princeton was converted in 1954 to the role of anti-submarine warfare carrier (CVS-37). Her new mission was to lead Hunter-Killer groups in the Pacific. In 1956, the Princeton departed for a deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, carrying aboard the new S2F-1 Trackers of Anti-Submarine Squadrons 20 (VS-20) and 21. These units were the U.S. Navy's spearhead in patrolling vast expanses of ocean against the growing Soviet submarine threat.
