The 357th Fighter Group, known as "The Yoxford Boys," was one of the most successful fighter groups in the U.S. Eighth Air Force. With the noses of their Mustangs painted in a red and yellow checkerboard pattern, they were a feared sight for the Luftwaffe. The group produced more than 40 flying aces and was credited with destroying over 600 enemy aircraft in the air, establishing itself as an elite unit.

On October 12, 1944, he became an "ace in a day," shooting down five German fighters in a single mission. He finished the war with 11.5 confirmed victories. The name "Glamorous Glenn" was a tribute to his girlfriend, Glennis Faye Dickhouse, who would later become his wife.
