The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, nicknamed "Jug" (Juggernaut), was one of the most famous, robust, and heavy fighter planes of World War II. It was a flying fortress, powered by a potent Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine and armed with eight .50 caliber machine guns, capable of absorbing incredible combat damage and still bringing its pilot home. Although it began as a high-altitude interceptor, the P-47 found its true calling in ground attack, becoming a feared and decisive platform in the skies of Europe.
In the Brazilian Air Force, the P-47 Thunderbolt is an immortal legend. It was the aircraft that equipped the 1st Fighter Aviation Group (1st GAVCA), the elite unit of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force that fought heroically in the Italian campaign. With the battle cry "Senta a Pua!" (roughly translated as "Go for it!"), Brazilian pilots flew the P-47 in hundreds of ground attack and interdiction missions, earning the respect of allies and enemies for their bravery and effectiveness, and receiving the prestigious "Presidential Unit Citation" from the USA.
This exclusive artwork by Alexandre Guedes is a tribute to a national hero: First Lieutenant Aviator Luiz Lopes Dornelles. The piece depicts his P-47D Thunderbolt, S/N 42-26766, code Yellow B4. Dornelles was one of the most experienced and respected pilots in the squadron, having completed 89 combat missions. On April 26, 1945, during an attack on enemy positions in Alessandria, Italy, his aircraft was hit squarely by anti-aircraft fire. Dornelles was killed in action, making the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, just days before the end of the war in Europe.
