The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a Cold War icon and a naval aviation legend. Developed for the U.S. Navy as an air superiority fighter and long-range interceptor, the F-14 was designed to protect the fleet against threats over 90 miles away with its AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. Its most distinctive feature, its variable-geometry wings, allowed for exceptional flight performance at all speeds, making it one of the most formidable and recognizable aircraft of its era.
Few squadrons are as recognizable as VF-84 "Jolly Rogers." Famous for their intimidating skull-and-crossbones insignia, they became a symbol of naval aviation. The squadron transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in 1976 and quickly achieved international fame when it starred in the 1980 film "The Final Countdown," transforming the Jolly Rogers' F-14 into a pop culture icon. Throughout its history, VF-84 participated in critical missions in Lebanon, the Persian Gulf, and the Balkans, operating from aircraft carriers such as the USS Nimitz and the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
This exclusive artwork by Alexandre Guedes depicts the F-14A Tomcat, Bureau Number 162702, tail code VICTORY 201, one of the aircraft that served with VF-84 "Jolly Rogers" during the height of its fame in the 1980s.
