The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, nicknamed "Jug," was one of the most famous and robust fighter planes of World War II. A true flying fortress, powered by a potent radial engine and armed with eight .50 caliber machine guns, it was capable of absorbing incredible combat damage and still bringing its pilot home. The P-47 found its calling in ground attack, becoming a decisive tool in the skies over Europe.
In the Brazilian Air Force, the P-47 is an immortal legend. It was the aircraft that equipped the 1st Fighter Aviation Group (1st GAVCA), the elite unit of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force that fought heroically in the Italian campaign. With the battle cry "Senta a Pua!" and the radio code "Jambock," the Brazilian pilots flew 444 combat missions, becoming specialists in ground attack and interdiction against Axis forces. For its bravery and effectiveness, the 1st GAVCA received the prestigious "Presidential Unit Citation" from the US government, a source of national pride.
This exclusive artwork by Alexandre Guedes is the ultimate tribute to the 1st GAVCA. It depicts not just one aircraft, but a collection of five iconic P-47D Thunderbolts from the squadron, including unit markings 1, A4, B2, C1, and D4.
