The Grumman F-14A Tomcat was much more than a fleet defense fighter; it was a platform for continuous innovation. To ensure its complex weapons systems—such as the AWG-9 radar and the AIM-54 Phoenix missile—functioned flawlessly, the U.S. Navy relied on Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 4, VX-4. Based at NAS Point Mugu, California, the "Evaluators" had the critical mission of pushing the Tomcat to its operational limits, developing the tactics that would be used by combat pilots worldwide.
Within the elite testing squadron, one aircraft reigned supreme: "Vandy 1". Traditionally, the squadron commander's jet received a distinctive paint scheme, but VX-4 took it to another level. BuNo 159853 made history as the first F-14A to sport the iconic "Black Bunny" paint scheme. Completely painted in gloss black and decorated with the famous white rabbit on the tail (an authorized reference to Playboy, which began with the F-4 Phantom), this aircraft became the ultimate symbol of rebellion and technical excellence in naval aviation.
This artwork by Alexandre Guedes captures the F-14A BuNo 159853 in all its "All Black" glory. The horizontal illustration is the only way to do justice to this painting: the semi-gloss paper interacts with the deep black color of the artwork to create a lacquered fuselage effect, exactly like the real aircraft. The white details—from the rabbit on the tail fin to the "XF" markings and test stripes—pop, creating an elegant and aggressive visual contrast that will dominate any wall.
Premium Finish ("Gloss Black" Effect):
Landscape Format (42 x 30 cm): The horizontal orientation enhances the Tomcat's long and aggressive silhouette, allowing you to appreciate the contrast between the dark fuselage and the white details from end to end. Cinematic Contrast: The 250g coated paper with a semi-gloss finish is crucial here. In a predominantly black artwork, this finish ensures that the black is deep and rich, without becoming dull, simulating the glossy finish of the original aircraft.
Historical Fidelity: An exact side profile of the first jet "Black Bunny," drawn by Alexandre Guedes, respecting every curve and insignia of the period at Point Mugu.
